The RF-4E (Model 98LG) was produced by transplanting the nose of the RF-4C onto the airframe of the F-4E in Thailand without leading edge slats, and the first aircraft made its first flight on September 15, 1970, and all 150 aircraft produced were for export to Western countries, including West Germany, Japan, Israel, Iran, Turkey, It was exported to Greece.

The Japan Air Self-Defense Force ordered 14 aircraft in April 1973 as a successor to the RF-86F, and in March 1975 received all of them, establishing the 501st Reconnaissance Squadron at Hyakuri Air Base, Ibaraki Prefecture.

During the eruption of Mt. Usu in 2000, we conducted photo reconnaissance from the sky, and were also active in gathering information in the event of a disaster.

The decal is a set of special mark aircraft that was unveiled in the

1994 war competition from the markings of the 501st Squadron of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Reconnaissance Squadron.

It is a design with motifs of "blue dragon", "white tiger", "genbu", "vermilion", and "kirin".
